The Journey Begins

beginning at love.

present at my birth, it dimmed and meandered as trauma, loss, hardship showed up as more powerful than the energy that first breathed life into my lungs.

beginning at love.

present at my birth, it dimmed and meandered as trauma, loss, hardship showed up as more powerful than the energy that first breathed life into my lungs.

love.

i’m beginning.

one year and 7 months ago i met a person who has changed my life and for whom i know i was intended. surrounding us was laughter.  old friends reuniting, food recommendations, and a smile i will never forget.

it belonged to Brandon Lacy Campos.

as we were introduced, chicago folk meeting new york folk, reunited new york folk-once minnesota-folk. i met my fiance (one of the reunited new york-once minnesota-folk), while Brandon and they, we, and all of us gathered, the first pride weekend that gay marriage was legalized in New York.  when love showed up profound and limitless.

one year and 5 months later we lost Brandon Lacy Campos.

i held my partner’s hand as they cried for the loss of a good and old friend. we cried and held each other while new york folk, minnesota folk, and beyond mourned a fierce queer dreamer lost.

so much love.

i wondered then as i do now, the matter it would have made for Brandon to have known the words and gestures of love made in his honor posthumously, while he was still living?  For all of the song, dance, prayers, acknowledgements, food, memories, stories, tears especially reserved for his passing, to be bountifully offered to his living spirit.  And what might this mean for all of the brown, queer, warriors and dreamers who live to love and change our world toward it best, to know how abundantly the are endeared?  Now.

Love Is. my contribution to that movement.  Love Is. my offering to the legacy that brown love is still revolutionary. Love Is. my acknowledgement that i am because an amazing warrior said “yes” and committed to my growth.  Love Is. a call to speak to the life, spirit, and work of our leaders/lovers/conjurers/justice seekers/artisans/dreamers/, so that their efforts and selves may be lifted.  so that they may be.

this blog will post weekly words & letters of love to queer & trans warriors of color. those artists and activists whose work in the world make all of the difference.  it will share and imagine, reflect and critique, call and respond; writing within and from love.

i invite you to share your warriors with me and your love with one another.
