Awakening (A Series of Starts) Study I

choreographed by: Ni’Ja Whitson

Awakening (A Series of Starts) Study I (2011) is an experimental performance work that asks how the liberation movements in Egypt, Libya, and London of 2011 are in conversation with Michelangelo’s idea of The Awakening Slave, the title of an “unfinished” sculpture he made c 1516-1519. The sculpture, one of a series of four, captures in permanence the moment of freedom; we bare witness to the human at the point of freedom, the stone crumbling at the slave’s emergence.
